These are the questions which need to be answered: Technologies, use cases and applications: – How much data is already recorded today? o There is information that a B787 generates 500 Gbytes of data in one flight. – Which data are used in which systems, for which purposes and to which Locations in the aircraft (e.g. with sensors etc.)? – How are they transmitted (which physical media, data buses, Communication network architectures, etc.) and where to? o in the aircraft / on-board o on the floor – Where is the data aggregated and processed, with what outputs? – What are the use cases? b. Products and Suppliers: – Which systems (e.g. PM), solutions, architectures and products are available from which providers and which are announced? This is the way how it can be approached: The focus is on big data in aircraft. I have to have an overview of all subsystems and the communication between the systems and how much data is being transferred. I have structured it in this way. Airplane is a system of systems – What systems and subsystems are there? (top-down) – Data exchange takes place between the systems as well as within the systems. – For a respective system – What functions (e.g. mechanical systems) are there? – How are these functions monitored, regulated / controlled, …? – What does monitoring mean? (Short-term cycles / real-time up to Long-term cycles such as maintenance) – What does control / regulation (‘Control’) mean? (Short-term cycles / real-time up to Long-term cycles such as maintenance) – How is data recorded for monitoring and controlling the functions? (Sensors, what amounts of data do they produce, where are they located in the aircraft) – Where are the elements of the system in the aircraft (mech. System, sensors, Controller, actuators)? – How many devices are there (network size)? – What are the interfaces to the environment (peripheral systems, pilot, ground) Communication systems and networks (basics) – Principles of a communication system / network (sender, receiver) – communication requirements – Communication standards (topologies / architectures e.g. star, bus, wireless, …) – Background regarding communication standards in aircraft such as CAN, ARINC, AFDX, Fiber, WAIC, …): Performance parameters vis-a-vis communication requirements. Communication networks in the aircraft  Communication requirements of the systems such as bandwidth, latency, reliability, Network size, …  Communication standards in the aircraft. what are there and what are they used for?  Existing communication networks: where will the data be transferred and what will happen there? them?  Are they processed in controllers, e.g. for regulation, or stored or forwarded e.g. to actuators, other systems in the aircraft, to the pilot, to Skywise, to the ground …?
